Council's City Plan 2013 has identified a number of possible pedestrian and cycle bridges for future investigation, one of which is connecting Bulimba to Teneriffe, however no detail has been provided. Bulimba/Hawthorne is in desperate need of a pedestrian/cycle bridge between Bulimba and Teneriffe. A pedestrian bridge would not only connect Hawthorne, Bulimba, Balmoral and surrounding areas to the city, it would encourage healthier lifestyles for commuters; take more cars off the roads, and increase foot traffic through to the Bulimba and Teneriffe high streets, which would further benefit the community. The disproportionate level of investment in bridges on the western side of the city, connecting suburbs such as Southbank, West End, Milton, Paddington, Toowong, etc... has reached a tipping point; breeding a feeling of malcontent and frustration in residents of Hawthorne, Bulimba, Balmoral and surrounding suburbs. These suburbs have the Gateway Bridge (which is tolled) and the Story Bridge (a motorway). Meanwhile, the western suburbs have the Captain Cook Bridge, Goodwill Bridge, Victoria Bridge, Kurilpa Bridge, William Jolly Bridge, Merivale Bridge, Go Between Bridge, Eleanor Schonell (Green) Bridge and many others further upstream. This frustration is exacerbated when dealing with driving through the bottlenecks of Hawthorne and Riding Roads (for which there is no clear solution) or cycling/walking along Wynnum Road and Shafston Avenue, which at times can be so busy it verges on being dangerous. While a new Teneriffe CityCat terminal has recently been constructed, it still costs residents just under $10 a day to simply cross the river, not to mention frustrating timetable restrictions. It's time Council made a commitment to the residents of Hawthorne, Bulimba, Balmoral and surrounding areas to genuinely investigate a pedestrian/cycle bridge between Bulimba and Teneriffe.

We, the above signed, request that Council acknowledge the frustration of residents of Hawthorne, Bulimba, Balmoral and surrounding areas in the disproportionate investment in green bridges between the western and south/eastern suburbs and the demand for a pedestrian/cycle bridge between Bulimba and Teneriffe. We request Council provide timing around Council's investigation into a pedestrian/cycle bridge between Bulimba and Teneriffe as noted in the Brisbane City Plan 2013.
