Residents draw to the attention of Brisbane City Council the absence of off-leash dog parks in the suburb of McDowall. Residents in the area enjoy keeping active by walking their dogs in the nearby parks, particularly along Cabbage Tree Creek in Spielberg Street Park. However, there is nowhere for dogs to run, exercise and socialise with other dogs. The nearest off-leash dog park is in Bridgeman Downs. There is sufficient space for an off-leash dog park either in Spielberg Street Park or Streisand Drive Park in McDowall. An off-leash dog park will allow dogs to exercise and socialise in a safe environment without endangering or annoying people, property, or wildlife in the reserve/park. Additionally, this off-leash area would increase opportunities for residents to interact with their neighbours and help create a sense of community. Non-dog owners also benefit from a local canine population that is better socialised and exercised more frequently, as the dogs are more likely to be well-behaved.
Your petitioners therefore request that the Council considers the installation of an off-leash dog park in Spielberg Street Park or Streisand Drive Park (also known as Dr Valentine McDowall Park) in the suburb of McDowall.
I refer to your petition requesting that Council considers the installation of a dog off-leash park in McDowall.
Your petition has been investigated and it was considered by Council at its meeting held on 15 May 2018. It was decided that the petitioners be advised of the information below.
Your suggestions for a dog off-leash area to be installed in either Speilberg Street Park, Hamilton Road, McDowall, or Streisand Drive Park, Streisand Drive, McDowall have been considered. Council must take into account a number of factors when selecting a location for a dog off-leash area. While appreciating the benefits of a nearby dog off-leash area, unfortunately neither of the suggested locations were deemed suitable. This was due to a number of constraints including the close proximity to local residents, flooding along creek corridors and drainage channels, and lack of suitable open space for this activity.
Council endeavours to provide a dog off-leash area within two kilometres of most residents wherever possible. Unfortunately, there were no opportunities identified to provide a dog off-leash area in the McDowall area, as many of the parks are low lying in a flood plain that follows creek and drainage corridors.
As you may be aware, the nearest dog off-leash area to Speilberg Street Park and Streisand Drive Park is in Tallowwood Place Park, Karri Place, Bridgeman Downs, which Council encourage residents to use.
