Residents draw to the attention of the Lord Mayor that improvements proposed in the West End Riverside Parkland Master Plan, including the closure of Riverside Drive from Victoria Street to Davies Park, have not yet been implemented.

We, the epetitioners below, call on the Lord Mayor to fund, in the 2013-14 Budget, the improvements proposed in the West End Riverside Parkland Master Plan, including the closure of Riverside Drive from Victoria Street to Davies Park.

Council response

Your petition has been investigated and it was considered by Council at its meeting held on 3 September 2013. It was decided that the petitioners be advised of the information below.

It is important that any improvements that are undertaken in the West End Riverside Parklands and Davies Park are planned and designed within the broader context of the unique character of West End as it is now and how it is anticipated to be in the future. In this regard, the long term plans of the community, groups and sporting clubs in Davies Park and the West End Riverside Park precinct still need to be clearly determined.

It would be premature to commence any major improvement of West End Riverside Parklands and Davies Park until the future needs of the groups and sporting clubs associated with Davies Park are better determined and strategic links between Davies Park’s development and the broader planning context for West End are better resolved

If the project does proceed, some of these costs would be met by infrastructure charges contributions, but there would still be a significant financial burden on Council’s budget resulting in less funds being available for other projects and services that benefit the community.

Funding for implementing the West End Riverside Parkland Master Plan will not be considered until the future of the groups and sporting clubs associated with Davies Park is better determined and strategic links between Davies Park’s development and the broader planning context for West End are better resolved.
